North Side Housing to transition the management its homeless shelter to the Phoenix Foundation on May 20, 2024

On May 20, 2024, North Side Housing and Supportive Services (NSHSS) transitioned the management of our 50-bed men’s shelter at the Crossroads hotel to the Phoenix Foundation.  Phoenix is currently operating a large homeless shelter in other rooms at the same hotel.  Our 41 homeless clients who live there will remain in the rooms they currently occupy, avoiding the trauma of moving to another shelter.  Our shelter staff will be interviewed by Phoenix for the opportunity to keep their jobs at the newly combined shelter.  The Chicago Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) originated and approved this transition.

In November, NSHSS will be opening a new, $7 million, state-of-the-art shelter to house 70 homeless men in the Rogers Park neighborhood, before the beginning of winter.  This transition of our current shelter will allow our staff and Board to focus on preparing to open our new shelter.

North Side Housing will continue to provide apartment rental assistance, urgent assistance with food and clothing, and access to health care to people experiencing homelessness, through our Daytime Support Service and Housing Navigation Programs. For the 156 clients currently housed through our permanent supportive housing programs, our case managers will continue to provide supportive services to help them sustain their permanent, stable housing, stay healthy, and live independent lives.
